Sample Game: Achilles vs. Spartacus

In part 1, we briefly surveyed the cards that come in the Achilles vs. Spartacus starter game. Now we'll start setting up the game so that Jack and Jill can use those cards to play Anachronism.

Starting the Game: Placing Warriors

Now that Jack has the Greek (Achilles) cards and Jill has the Roman (Spartacus) cards, they are ready to start their first game. They spread out the game mat between them and each player gets a pair of six-sided dice. In the simulated playmat shown below, I'll keep all support cards oriented the same way as the page, for your convenience. Also, I'll refer to warriors' facings using the compass directions (west, north, east, and south) according to the orientation shown below. Finally, let's agree that Jack is sitting at the west side of the playmat, and Jill is sitting at the east side of the playmat.

To begin the game, Jack and Jill each roll two dice. Let's say that Jack rolls [1][5] and Jill rolls [3][4]. Jack rolled the lower number, so he must place his warrior in the arena first. Jack must place his warrior in his starting row (on our sample playmat below, that's row 4), but may orient the top of his warrior card (this is called his warrior's "facing") in any direction. Jack decides to place Achilles in square B4, facing east. Jill, who rolled higher for warrior placement, now places Spartacus in C1 (her starting row is row 1), facing west.
