Apocalypticism on the radio
Matchbox Twenty’s recent single, “How Far We’ve Come,” is a catchy, sing-along-with-able expression of apocalyptic thinking. The “reviewer” for Rhapsody.com, Jon Maples, completely missed the boat.
The lead single from Matchbox Twenty’s first release in five years could be the band’s new theme song. Lead singer Rob Thomas reunites with his mates after solo success and picks up right where he left off, leading this high-energy mid-tempo rocker that checks their progress as a band.
Wrong, pal. The song is not about “progress”; quite the opposite. The chorus goes like this:
I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we’re gonna find out
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Let’s see how far we’ve come
I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess we’re gonna pretend
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Let’s see how far we’ve come
The rest of the lyrics are equally pessimistic—or apocalyptic. You Revelation fans should get a kick out of the song.
